Vagina Flowers

Nobody sees a flower, really, it is so small. We haven't time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time.

If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it no one would see what I see because I would paint it small like the flower is small. So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers.

...Well, I made you take time to look at what I saw and when you took time to really notice my flower you hung all your own associations with flowers on my flower and you write about my flower as if I think and see what you think and see of the flower - and I don't. - Georgia O'Keeffe

Friday I went to the Shelburne Museum to check out the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit. The collection is rather small (but very nicely currated I must add!) but the gardens outside the building are spectacular.

"...I am going to be an artist!"--"I don't really know where I got my artist idea...I only know that by that time it was definitely settled in my mind." - Georgia O'Keeffe

I am not a huge O'Keeffe fan but anyone who can paint such sexy, luscious lady bits is all right with me, even if she didn't take kindly to her flowers being freely associated with body parts.

"I have things in my head that are not like what anyone has taught me...shapes and ideas so near to me...so natural to my way of being and thinking that it hasn't occurred to me to put them down..." - Georgia O'Keeffe

O'Keeffe marched to the tune of her own drummer, which is hard enough to do today, and even harder to do a century ago when women were intended for marriage and procreation alone. She seems an interesting woman after my own heart - a loner and a lover of nature who was happiest at her remote Ghost Ranch.

"When I think of death, I only regret that I will not be able to see this beautiful country anymore...unless the Indians are right and my spirit will walk here after I'm gone." - Georgia O'Keeffe

i've always loved georgia o'keefe. have you ever noticed i have the blue/grey line painting in my bathroom (i stare at it as i pee) and the orange/red flower on my bathroom door. her paintings are very vulvic (the word that i think should be the match for phallic, though there is no real word for things that look like a vagina, i wonder why...), but i don't care, i like them anyway, and in fact, that is why i like them!
