Au Revoir Papa

Goodbye Pops. It was real nice seeing you after all these years and sharing many delicious food items (many of which involved alcohol) with you this Father's Day weekend. The walk, talks and idea medleys were delightful. Come visit again real soon. We can read the Sunday New York Times and browse the bookstores together in a quiet silence of mutal understanding...

And remember what George Eliot wrote in Middlemarch:

"If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrel's heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence. As it is, the quickest of us walk about well wadded with stupidity."

And thanks to the current issue of the New Yorker for re-printing that quote in their funny article about cell phone ringers for the young (teachers - beware the mosquito ring tone that only those under 20 and dogs can hear) and for making me feel better about aging.

George Bernard Shaw really did say it best:

"Youth is wasted on the young."

Here is some music that my dad composed which was inspired by a piece of music Dvorak wrote in Iowa.

Harvey Sollberger, Piece 1
Harvey Sollberger, Piece 2

There are 7 movements total and they have names which I have forgotten. If you ever read this Pop, write and tell me what these are called, and write some more swell music for us dirty masses, we dig it. Word.

And another shout out for Joel at North Country Books. Thanks for watching the DBC and thanks for the book discounts. You made a father and daughter on a book outing very pleased with their heavy purchases. I am now reading the fabulous hard cover edition of Nancy Drew's, "The Case of the Wooden Lady." Good times.
