Featured on YouTube, Oh Joy, Not

Rome’s working class, the plebeians had little individual power.
Grouped together, however, they became a Roman mob and had to be handled carefully.

I never thought I would make it onto the YouTube homepage, never ever in one million years.

So when I logged onto my computer Sunday morning and my In box was packed full of messages from YouTube, I figured it was another channel page feature. I had to blink repeatedly when I clicked to the homepage and there we were.

Holy crap.

All day cabaret rehearsal and Stuck in Vermont 75: Jr Iron Chef views went from 374 to 130,000. Currently they are at 180,000 and our rating is 3.5 stars.

Many of the 300+ comments are vicious. Debating how gay VT is or isn't and how much VT sucks or does not suck. Pointing out how hideously unattractive I am with my googly eyes, greasy skin, bad table manners, annoying delivery...etc.

Molly did a nice recap of some of the more interesting comments. I have only waded through the comments a couple of times. It's rather painful.

Not all the featured videos get knocked so hard. The recently featured video of a cat playing with a theremin already has 800,000 hits, 4.5 stars and 3000 adoring comments along the lines of, "Awww, cute!" I can't compete with a cute kitty and the mob knows it.

Times like these make me glad I grew up without the internet. I can't imagine how I would have dealt with this sort of surreal ego-beating when I was an awkward teen. Thank goodness I am now an awkward middle-aged VTer where greasy skin is not a sin.

Thanks YouTube

There is nothing nicer than coming home to see hundreds of emails from YouTube. It generally means that they have featured your videos in some capacity or other and people are leaving comments or, better still, subscribing to your channel.

So far, three Stuck in Vermont videos have gotten some YouTube loving. Not on the main homepage mind you (that might cause me to have a conniption fit) but on the subsection pages. It is a grand feeling to watch a video's hits go from 200 to 39,000 in the course of a day. Jesus, is this what it feels like to be LisaNova!?

This weekend, YouTube featured Stuck in Vermont 36: Rosie's Girls on their DIY video page. They also put Rosie's Girls on the Director Video sidebar. The spotlight led to many nice comments, some creepy comments, some Spam and some new subscribers.

I even met the uber nice advice columnist for Elle, Ask E Jean whom my sister has been reading for many years. What a sweetie (even if it is just her assistant)!

Thanks YouTube for all the awesome work you do and for giving the Rosie's Girls some attention. Even if many of the commenters assumed the video was referring to Rosie O'Donnell instead of Rosie the Riveter. Sigh...

PS I ran into Tiffany, the Executive Director of VT Works for Women (the group that organizes Rosie's Girls) at the Harry Potter book release late Friday night (what a madhouse, there will be a video). Turns out she is the sister of the owner of The Flying Pig Bookstore. Small world!

Liminal Engagement is Stuck in VT

PS And many thanks to Bill and everyone for your kind words about my YouTube demise. It makes me feel much better even if it still stings a bit. Gotta run, four days of dress rehearsal in a row!! Egads, my feet will fall off from all this dancing! I finally found my own pair of Red Shoes!

New DBC on YouTube

Jesus, in case you aren't as sick of me as I am, you can now watch some of the new March episode of The Deadbeat Club #30 on YouTube (you know, the crappy episode I threw together in one measly evening).

In which Eva blabs about her dream job vlogging Stuck in Vermont for Seven Days, her upcoming show The Trojan Women, DBC mail and Margot and Eva give out the Deadbeat Oscars for 2007.

Feel the YT Love

Oh yes, my YT subscriptions may have shot up to 1707 thanks to the recent random luck of YT featuring me on their new user sign up page, this does not mean, however, that my vids get watched more. That is probably a good thing as I suspect my YT days are numbered.

My main viewership stills seems to come from angry teenagers who despise me for featuring their beloved stars - be they punk, tortured, teeny bopper, hipster, Asian or British. And this is where the love comes in, comments that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Below is a sampling and please keep in mind, these are all recent! The consensus is this, I get the award for being the most annoying/ugly person EVER (thank you Academy), I need to be slapped...a lot...and I should find my way to a cliff for the part I played in kitten stabbings (those last two are my favorites! A++ for creativity!).

Thanks lovers!

I love people like this - moaning about the achievements of others when they get nowhere with their own BUT are too busy bitching about them than using that very same energy to get them what they want. It's superficial, it's arrogant and narcissistic and I'll be laughing when I find out dear eva is now working in a call centre.

YouTube Milestone

Another big number for a small fish like me in the massive, nebulous, swirling universe of YouTube. Yesterday I hit a total of 400,000 views. This number is really a drop in the YouTube bucket when you consider that a 10 second cell phone video of a cat mewing pitiously is likely to exceed my entire number of views - but to me, this is a big deal.

I've been posting videos for about 11 months now and I have to give credit to Tanner for giving me the heads up that YouTube (and Blogspot) even existed ("Why yes, I DO live under a rock, thanks for asking!"). In the beginning, I posted videos fast and furious, excited to see the hits rack up in a minute. Who were these strangers watching my video of Pin Thin celebrity paperdolls having a high pitched cat fight? Who were they and where were they?

I realized quickly that the celeb vids were sure fire ways to get views but later decided all the haters and their gushing rivers of vitriolic acid were not worth the views. I don't post many celeb vids anymore, in fact, I don't feel the urge to make many celeb vids these days either.

Not many people watch my current meager offerings, the Stuck in Vermont vlog about local artists and The Deadbeat Club vlog about whatever cultural/personal events I care to record. But it isn't so much the numbers as the quality of the people watching. I have made friends in England, Croatia, Australia, Japan, New York, Nashville and Austin. I've reconnected with people from my past and learned a ton about editing and making videos.

You never know what you will find when you try something new. But often this is what makes life so damn entertaining. Who knows what is around my YouTube corner or how long my channel will exist, but for now I am gonna take a moment to be thankful that I stumbled upon this little piece of internet paradise. And to celebrate, "Oh Bondage, Up Yours!"

DBC29 on YouTube

Meet Bobo, Tonci's dog.
Bobo and Tonci live in the seaside town of Split in Croatia.

Bobo dreams of watching Vermont cable access TV.
OH BOY! Now he can do so on YouTube!

As an experiment, I tried putting an entire one hour episode of The Deadbeat Club (the latest show, January 2007, #29) on YouTube. More than anything, this is for our good DBC pals, Marti in England and Tonci in Croatia who are mentioned in the show but do not get Channel 15 on their TVs. Thank goodness for YouTube!

Bobo does NOT like to be dressed up like a foolish reindeer.
He IS, after all, a DOG!

It turns out that having a YouTube Director account does NOT allow you to upload videos of any size. I am not exactly sure how BIG you can go but it is somewhere around the 25 minute, 85 MB mark. Ah well, after many different cuts and compressions and Frankenstein incarnations, I managed to break DBC29 into four bite-sized bits and posted them to YouTube! Phew!

Tonci's little brother obliges us by dressing up like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and saving the Christmas spirit for each and every one of us! Thanks!

Hopefully the cuts btw the four parts are not too jarring. I wish I could post the whole hour of DBC29 as it reads best this way but I guess I cannot hog ALL of YouTube's server space (much as I might like to). Anyway, this is for you international and non-Northern VT blokes:

Or just watch the entire playlist of DBC29 here:

PS Thanks for the holiday pictures Tonci!

New DBC Airs Tonight!

That's right, it might be late but I don't care 'cause it is finally done, almost. After a gruelling all-nighter and lots of caffeine, the new January episode is almost in VCAM's hands.

First I have to dub it to tape AGAIN because I accidentally left in a random 5 second sound clip and it messed up my Offasty dance montage! Argh! CURSES! And if I survive this, I am dragging my tired butt to brunch at Lani's for crepes! Mmmmm. Please watch (details here). I am delirious.

The Deadbeat Club
January 2007
Episode 29
The Changes Show

Premieres:
Sunday at 9pm
Channel 15

And for a steamy preview, enjoy the last installment of The Offasty: A Room with a View:

DBC10 Reruns Tonight!

Airing for the LAST time tonight ('cause I am too much of a deadbeat to turn in a new episode on time, AS IF!):

The Deadbeat Club
January 2005
Episode 10
TONIGHT at 11:30pm
Channel 15

In my opinion, the DBC10 New Year's Show is far better than the one I am currently editing. It includes a hopping 50s Deadbeat Party, a DBC NYE countdown with people from all over the world, a look at WHY NYE sucks so bad, some predictions for the year 2005 (sung a la Conan Obrien's "In the year 2000"), a Mad Max preview, and a HOT HOT HOT Jane Austen Babes of the Month (seriously, yum!).

What's that you say? You don't live in Burlington Vermont but you would still like to watch the rerun! Well, bless your sweet lil' heart. And bless YouTube's heart too!

Embedded below are DBC10's NYE Countdown and Jane Austen's BOTM:

NEW DBC Airs Sunday

Yes, what with all the happy endings and crazy changes and what not, I have not had time to finish snipping up the January Episode #29 of The Deadbeat Club. Tonight (Friday) a rerun from January of 2005 will air at 11:30pm on Channel 15.

The first new DBC episode of 2007 will air Sunday:

The Deadbeat Club
January 2007
Episode 29
The Changes Show

Premieres:
Sunday at 9pm
Channel 15

Some highlights of DBC29 will hopefully be:

2006 DBC Montage
Suzanne tries to hijack DBC

Deadbeats look back on 2006

Deadbeats 2007 predictions

Margot and Zombie Movies
Eva and Vlogs (Scott Walker and Regina Spektor)

Mom and her Political Movie Review (SIR! NO SIR!)

The final installment of The Offasty: A Room with a View

Sadly, I might have to miss watching the premiere Sunday as I will be at my first rehearsal for Champlain's production of The Trojan Women. I am terrified to do a real drama as I am not much more than a clown when it comes to "acting." But it will be fun to wallow and muck about in the drama, trauma and pain of this heartbreaking tale of Troy with some other lovely people!

Offasty Goodbyes

Miss Abbie asked me to post this old, odd Offasty from DBC25 in which we say goodbye to Aimee and Abbie - sigh - and the Flynn was never the same without them! And Lesh and Lisa and Kelly too! Sigh, sigh, double sigh. Oh it is too sad, all the wonderful people who have come and gone. Sigh.

This Offasty was a whole lot of fun to make, but complicated too as bits of it were a surprise for those featured. As usual, goofing around with Suzanne and Abbie was ever so much fun: carressing office supplies, having catfights and temper tantrums, overacting, dressing up, and dancing through cubicles and fluorescently lit corridors is always better when with these girls.

It makes me wistful to look back now since it has been too, too long now that the girls have been gone. How many goodbyes can one girl take? EH?! OOF, and the Madonna/Abbie slow mo montage still gets me everytime! Sniffle. The Offasty never really was the same without you gems!

Now I am getting ready to leave The Offasty nest (sniffle, sniffle) and I have been musing over the final Offasty installment. All I can think of is an episode in which I lose my marbles, only it is an actual bag of marbles. And perhaps I accuse someone of stealing them, via email of course, which will lead to some sort of a fight and dance montage no doubt. Hmmm....

And of course, there is still The Offasty episode starring the Lovely Lesh and Seth La Douche still to come (not edited yet) about the office tendency to Copy Cat outfits and pay avid attention to what everyone else is wearing. Be on the look out for that one in January's DBC29.

So without further ado, here is the third installment of The Offasty (featuring Ella the 3 Legged Wonder Dog!) in which you get a behind the scenes look at the lovely Flynn staff, an amazing family if there ever was one, and we say a tearful goodbye to Aimee and Abbie. We love you girls!

Handbags of Horror!

EXHIBIT D: REANIMATED VILENESS
Here Miu Miu pays homage to Tarman, the star zombie in 1985's Return of the Living Dead. According to a Miu Miu press release, "The company first created this quilted nappa leather bag ($1095) in 1987, then brutally poisoned it, allowing it to decay for decades before reviving it with 2-4-5 Trioxin gas, a proprietary process which accounts for the bag's unique stench and distinctive texture, as well as its compulsion to eat brains." - Dale Hrabi

Is it safe to go back to the mall again? Will your wallet be attacked by a handbag resembling a creature from the black lagoon? Oh no ladies, watch out for that terrifying handbag! Eeeeek! (thanks Lani for the link!)

And now for my own take on the monsterously overpriced and ridiculous handbag trend:

Here are some fun nasty comments on this video:

Evange (7 months ago)
The only thing worse than a tacky nouveau riche handbag, is a self rightgeous nouveau riche wannabe who compensates for their unglamourus financial situation by critiquing others.great video*thumbs up*

goosegui (7 months ago)
I'm so sorry for you . You don't know what it's like to have the real thing . Who ever said money can't buy love has never to Prada .

chloehandbags (6 months ago)
I like high quality items, including bags and try as I might to like cheap, mass produced bags, I find it impossible to do. I also prefer to think of my posessions as having been handmade by artisans in the West; rather than machined on lethal sewing machines, by poor little one-armed Chinese children. I'm a bit funny like that! So I try to buy the best that I can afford.

Yes, now I see!! Spending $1000 on a handbag is really just supporting the arts and thumbing your nose at the exploitation of third world countries! YES! Way to tell 'em! Oh, I do so love being a "self rightgeous nouveau riche wannabe"!

YouTube Feeding Frenzy

Nobody ever defended anything successfully, there is only attack and attack and attack some more.
General George S. Patton

Comments on my more "popular" YouTube videos often fall into a tiresome pattern: they begin friendly and supportive and then swing dramatically to vitriolic hatred spewing evil. And once they swing this way, there is no going back to the light, it is only sulfurous denunciation and blistering criticism for as far as the eye can see. Ouch.

feed·ing fren·zy (plural feed·ing fren·zies): violent feeding by many animals: an intense violent period of eating that occurs when a large number of animals of the same or related species such as sharks or piranhas converge on a food source

Sometimes I wonder if the feeding frenzy is really just one person sitting at their computer monitor and posting as "deatheater," "billiejoelover," and "punkrockforeva" all at the same time (maybe it is the same evil doer/chubby computer nerd in the Southpark World of Warcraft episode?).

What causes so many people to all of a sudden start attacking you? Is it some sort of instinctual fanboy pack mentality? Once the buffalo is wounded and down on the ground, the jackals rip out its entrails and strew them all over the sahara - that sort of thing?

The phrase "herd behavior" has acquired a certain currency in popular psychology, where the idea of a herding instinct is offered as an explanation of phenomena such as crazes where large numbers of people act in the same way at the same time. Such people are sometimes labelled with the derogatory term "sheeple." - Wikipedia

This intense swing from good to evil comments has infected a large number of videos I've posted. At first I thought it was a fluke but now I know better. It started with my Green Day videos. People were so nice at first and asking me if I could say hello to Billie Joe and thanking me for telling my story. Then the pure hatred began to spill out and I stopped bothering to read the comments, so inane, childish and rude were they.

XxAlexanderGordonxX (7 months ago)
FUCK THAT STUPID ASS WOMAN! SHE CAN SUCK A GUYS COCK! GOD BILLIE JOE CAN YELL AT HER ALL HE WANTS BECAUSE SHE'S AN ASSHOLE!

The same thing happened with my Bai Ling video. The comments suddenly veered off on all these tangents about how hideously ugly I was with my Jewish nose and red lipstick. Hmm.

The last comment claimed I was racist (an ugly Jewish racist, apparently) which is probably a little bit true. Granted, that Bai Ling impression that I did was not so kind (and my Chinese accent sucked, I was more going for crazy lady accent) but COME ON, she is coo coo, that is why I LOVE HER! Oddly enough, this is one of my most popular videos?! Who would have thought Bai Ling had so many fans/defenders/Jew haters.

Visquo (6 months ago)
Bai Ling has a nice bod, but that's it. The ugly Jewish? girl presenting is annoying as fuck.

My Britney Spears videos get A LOT of heat but I stopped reading those comments a long time ago. There were lots of teens defending Britney's pregnancy weight gain and asking how we would feel if we were fat and pregnant. See, the thing is, they missed the irony we were going for entirely but YouTube is not known for its shades of grey. It is odd that a white trash girl from Texas could inspire so much fanatic love and support from her blood thirsty fans but, perhaps that is part of her charm.

btd456 (8 months ago)
eew what an ugly narrating bitch, where does that thing get off dissing other people?! seriously with that bright red lipstick and big bug eyes make her look like sum crazy crack whore! and whats with the cheap lesbian video too? who cares if brit hasnt lost the weight shes still a great person so fuck off ugly crazy bitch!

My James Frey video got TONS of mean comments which pissed me off as they were attacking my sister (you can call me a big googly eyed freak but if you fuck with my sister, there is hell to pay!!). I secretly suspect that it is James Frey HIMSELF posting all these nasty snarky comments. That would be SO like him, staying up late, drinking soup from a can and posting nasty YouTube comments under different user names like "F*ckOprah!"

flourescentlights (3 months ago)
James Frey isnt a shitty writer, and leave Jen alone,
They both have more talent, and nicer voices in their pinky nails, than you would in an intire entourage of yours.

Thanks to my Skel Fab vids, I had an awesome fight with a teen named Heather2006 (or was it a middle aged man in Wisconsin named Fred?? I will never know) about what a bitch I am for dissing Lindsay Lohan (she was ok with my dissing of Nicole Richie but back off the Lohan MFer!). More importantly, Heather2006 wanted to make it clear to me what a sad pitiful dorky loser I was for staying at home on a Friday night and playing with my paperdolls (pretty accurate Heather!).

heatherp2006 (6 months ago)
Yeah you girls are dumb. I love nicole and all them you are making fun off. how insecure can you be. oh that is not funny. by the way get your facts strait Jessica Simpson looks fine she doesn't look like that you girls are stupid and must have no social lifes. lol kidding or am I lol.

heatherp2006 (5 months ago)
you are gay

Oddly enough, after all our smarmy hatred back and forth, Heather2006 became strangely human and friendly to me...weird. It was almost like the human contact of our chatting chilled her out.

The case of animals evading a predator illustrates the uncoordinated nature of herd behavior. It can be shown that each individual can minimise the danger to itself by choosing the location and behavior that is as close to the center of the group as possible; this was the subject of a famous paper by evolutionary biologist W. D. Hamilton called Geometry For The Selfish Herd. The herd thus appears to act as one in always moving and acting together, but its behavior emerges from the uncoordinated behavior of self-seeking individuals. - Wikipedia

After all this acerbic hate so early in my meager YouTube career, I stopped posting videos that I knew would catch a lot of flack.

No more Britney, celebs (oddly enough, you can insult Brangelina and Jessica Simpson 'till the cows come home and nobody protests!?) or political stuff. I stuck to the less well known topics like artists and started making fewer celeb vids (got boring anyways).

This worked for a bit and the evil comments died down to a faint patter on my YouTube windowpane. Whenever I got a notification that there was a comment for any one of the vids mentioned above, I hid it away until a day when I felt strong and cocky enough for a good self-depricating laugh or two. Many were entertaining if nothing else.

A couple of episodes ago we did a piece on the British TV show Peep Show. As usual, we didn't really plan out what we were going to say and hadn't even watched the show in a while so we were a little rusty on the characters names - I know! I know! Just one stop to Wikipedia and we would have been all set!

But I tried to make up for this lack of preparation by spending countless hours editing this puppy. When you are editing a show as good as Peep Show, there are millions of good clips to choose from. I digitized hours of footage and spend about 20 hours or so wheedling it down to the 20 minute segment which aired on the show (complete with a hot hot HOT New Order montage that still gives me chills).

It wasn't genius, it wasn't awful, it was just a moderately ok review of a great TV show. I posted in to YouTube and hoped other fans might have some comments and we could share our mutual love of Brit comedy. It all started out fine and dandy. My teenage Scottish pal quoted some of his favorite Peep Show lines and I quoted back. Nice comments from other fans.

Then the hatred began. And it never stopped, (see all comments) it just kept on coming and coming and coming like a mad feeding frenzy and God help, me, I fanned the flames:

I can't stand people like these two annoying cows. Acting like they discovered some show that's never been seen in America ever, because they're so intelligent or whatever, yet they don't know the names of the characters, actors, or even the story. Peep Show has been on tv is the US for quite awhile. It's called BBCAmerica, tools. I love that they act like the US wont get the show, or it'll be too shocking or whatever, yeah if all you ever watch is Friends or crap like that -Maru

AmarnaMaru (3 weeks ago)
There are a lot of comedy fans in the US, who love shows from both sides of the Atlantic. At the very least, do a little homework! If you had bothered to look anywhere online, maybe you would have known the characters names at least. The reason this video bothers me is that it does a disservice to Peep show, and UK comedy in general. I don't want people to be put off UK shows, just because the reviewers were so lame. so, boo intellectual cripples! ... yah good comedy!

AmarnaMaru (3 weeks ago)
This is the part of the cream of UK comedy, they have bad/boring shows just like us. If you like UK shows, or you think you might, watch BBCAmerica, they show repeats all the time, other channels have UK shows as well. Then, get yourself a region free DVD player, and DVDs off AmazonUK. Its so worth it. Just please don't listen to people like these, who can simultaneously fulfill the myth that Americans are dim, while talking about how smart they are.

evadeadbeat (3 weeks ago)
thank you for all your thoughtful attention to these pressing issues!

PS why don't you edit your own Peep Show review! I'll be the first to watch it! The more, the better!

Oh and these two ladies... well done on liking it, but fuck me are you annoying!

Many of these comments fall into the category of: annoying-as-hell, hyper-critical fanboy mentality of, "How dare you attempt to be an expert on something that I know SO MUCH MORE about than YOU, piddly mortal! Pfft!"

"Fanboys" remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors that differ from their point of view. They are also typically hateful to the opposing brand or competition of their obsession regardless of its merits or achievements.
Wikipedia

Come on! We don't claim to be fucking Peep Show experts (there should be such a thing though)! We don't get paid for it, we do it because we enjoy it. We are just your average sort of fans expressing an interest. And more importantly, make your own video assfaces! I'd like to see you spend 20 hours editing the little bitch, forgoing sleep and bathroom breaks!

Er, ehm. Oh my, I got carried away there. Thankfully, there has been a little ray of sunshine through all the cruel mist:

Heh, we Brits really are protective of our comedies aren't we? Calm down chaps, even foreign devils can worship at the altar of British humour! I mean, I know we like to think it makes us better than every other nation on Earth (naturally), but lets try to be gracious in accepting their admiration. And come on, they are right about American sit-coms. Keep up the good work ladies!

evadeadbeat (3 hours ago)
yes yes, we DO worship at your mighty altar of British comedy! do not blame us for being piddly, pesky, inarticulate Americans with poor choices on the telly (the best we got is The Office and we stole it from you gents!). thank you thank you tragiccarpet for your kindness - from two foreign devils/birds/infidels!

We love you tragicgcarpet, honest we do. And in closing, let's all lower our blood pressure with the ever charming words of Miss Betty White:

Keep the other person's well being in mind when you feel an attack of soul-purging truth coming on."

YouTube Milestone

Well, it only took about ten zillion years but finally, after watching the hits go one after another, one by one, day after day, I finally hit the 300,000 view mark. Somebody uncork the champagne and pour it over my zombie head! Phew.

I know, I know, this means that there are 10 people in Thailand watching the Green Day video over and over again, but who cares, I will remain blissfully ignorant and pretend it is a big deal (oh but it is to me!).

I remember the first weekend I posted vids to YouTube and was shocked (and mildly disturbed) to see a random Lindsay Lohan VS Nicole Richie paperdoll video get 800 hits in one hour. An addiction was born that day and I need my daily fix.

Oh YouTube, please never delete my account, thereby forcing me to start this hideous hit addiction from scratch and, god forbid, the NUMBER ONE...eeek!
