Kat and I made the trek up to Montreal for Madonna on Thursday. In all of the many, many years that I have been listening to her, imitating her and shaking my butt to her music, I never once got around to seeing her live. WTF???
Luckily for me, I never throw ANYTHING away so it only took a little bit of digging to come up with my lace black cut off gloves (my sister got these for me in Paris when I was a freshly converted Madonna-phile), striped slutty mall dress (and yes, I can still cram into it), bright orange hair bow (the one they made fun of me for wearing to a Lamoille HS dance) and ripped up Sex Pistols t-shirt.
When she first came out on stage, my heart almost stopped. Then I recovered and danced the rest of the show which was a blur of colors, spectacle, poorly remixed old hits, crotch shots and a musty walk down memory lane.
That chick is 50. Seems like only yesterday I was mesmerized by her gyrating on Night Tracks and copying every move she made.
I am not sure why but I have been singing this song all day long. Perhaps cabaret rehearsals have uncovered my inner diva (as well as leaving my out of shape ass all achy - ouch)?
Sure Madonnna may not be the best singer in the world but she OWNS the stage for this one, oh baby! Like she says, "A girl can get awfully awful in the spotlight."
All I have to do is hear the opening bit to this song and I get out of my chair and start posing like an idiot. Damn, that lady puts on one helluva good show:
I've always been a HUGE Grey Gardens fan so the prospect of Edie and Madonna mashed up, well, that is like a dream come true for this little panty hose wearing, somewhat shut-in, dances by herself superfreak. Thanks to Digibudi (my Belgian doppelganger) for the heads up on this vid. To quote U2, "Two hearts, beat as one..."
PS As I get older, I become more and more comfortable with the rather creepier Edie-sides of my personality. Sure, in some respects they are weird and crazy but in others, they are refreshing and all my own...at least, that is what the crazy agorophobic, absurdly dressed, lives with her sister, cat lady shouts to herself when walking alone down the street...
Yep, this is what I am talking about Retronome! Would it kill you to play some early Madonna, eh? Like something off her first album perhaps? You know, the one simply called "Madonna?" The one I had a cassette tape of and played over and over again in my bedroom as I marveled at her sexual prowess and killer fashion sense.
"Lucky Star" was the first Madonna video I ever saw. I think I probably caught it late at night on a pre-Mtv show called "Night Tracks" that I used to watch at Crystal's house. The second we saw her, we were hooked, like teenage moths to the flame.
We followed suit with forearms thick with jelly bracelets, florescent bows cluttering our ratty bleached hair, cut off lace gloves, chipped nail polish and ripped fishnets. We thought we were so cool and edgy but most of the people in our rural VT town just thought we were crazy.
"Lucky Star" is Madonna at her best. The video's production value is miniscule and it consists simply of Madonna oozing her raw star charms in a small white room with only two back up dancers and a shoddy dance routine to aid her.
She twists, bends and purrs like an alley cat. She is irresistible. She bares her soft belly (I miss the days of her soft belly, she is so hard nowadays), licks her lips, winks and convinces you that you, and you alone, are her lucky star:
PS On a totally unrelated note, I had my first test tonight. Since my Flash course is intermediate and I am so far behind, I figured I would fail it. But, surprise surprise, I know more than I realized and I think I did OK. This school thing is not so bad after all. And I am working on a fun Flash project which combines stop mo, crude animation and doodling - oh yeah!
I am so excited to learn Flash, Dreamweaver, Motion, Illustrator and Photoshop too! It is so cool to work on projects that fascinate you, even if it is sometimes stop and go and even if I am rusty at learning new software. OH BOY, what tech nerd fun!
Now I just have to learn all my lines for The Trojan Woman 'cause we go off book in two weeks - eeeek!!! Lucky star, help my brain increase its processing speeds! PGUON!
And now for the ladies, here are some dashing dancing fellows to sweep you off your feet (gotta balance all those girlie pin ups pics with something for the gals).
It's also a look back at DBC18: September, 2005, in which the deadbeats celebrate their Babe of the Month dancers in this special dance episode. The top 5 are: Gene Anthony Ray (Leroy from Fame), Christopher Walken (wowie! he can dance!), Mikhail Baryshnikov, John Travolta and Gene Kelly. Please to enjoy the Madonna dance montage at the end!
